What a forestry mulcher attachment actually does

The mulcher mounts to your carrier’s boom and runs off its auxiliary hydraulics. A rotor spinning at speed carries cutting tools that shear and grind material, and a spiked anvil sizes the output as it passes through.

Because it cuts at height and reach, an excavator mulcher can take a tree down from the top, work over a fence line, reach across a drain, or clear a batter without the machine leaving stable ground. That reach is the main reason contractors run mulchers on excavators.

Our rotors are horsepower-controlled, or bite-limiting, which means the tool geometry restricts how much material the rotor can take in a single pass. That protects the driveline and keeps the rotor pulling instead of stalling.

The two broad designs work differently, and the right one depends on what you are cutting.

Our excavator forestry mulchers run a C3 tooth adapter system, with bear claw or carbide tooth options so you can match the tooling to the ground you work on. Tungsten teeth are standard, with carbide options available on request.

If you are cutting light regrowth and grass more often than timber, a flail mower may be the better tool. If you are mixing both, talk to us about tooth selection rather than changing machine.

Matching a mulcher to your carrier and hydraulics

This is where most buying mistakes happen. Three things have to line up.

Carrier weight. The mulcher has to sit within the machine’s lift and stability envelope at working reach, not just at the pins. Our excavator range covers carriers from 5 to 35 tonnes across four weight classes.

Hydraulic flow and pressure. A mulcher wants as much oil flow as the machine can produce, and it wants that flow held steady under load. Each of our classes has a specified flow and pressure range, published on this page against each model. If your machine sits at the bottom of a range, you will feel it in the recovery time after a heavy bite.

Consistent rotor speed. Our units use French-made Hydro Leduc bent-axis piston motors with an American Sunvalve pressure-compensating flow control valve, which holds rotor RPM steady rather than backing off under reduced demand. On continuous heavy-load work, that is the difference between finishing the day and cooking the oil.

Why mulching in place beats push and burn

Push-and-burn moves the problem. You still have to windrow, wait for a permit and a weather window, burn, then deal with the scar and the regrowth that follows disturbed soil.

Mulching converts the vegetation where it stands. The material stays on site as a cover layer that holds moisture, slows erosion on slopes and breaks down into the soil. There is no burn permit to chase, no windrow to handle twice, and no heavy soil disturbance from blade work, which matters on erodible or contour-sensitive country.

It is also a one-pass operation in most conditions, which is why contractors quoting on area rates tend to switch.

Maintenance, wear parts and support

Teeth and tool holders are consumables. How fast they go depends on the ground, and abrasive or rocky sites will chew tooling faster than clean timber. Keeping tools sharp and replaced on time protects the rotor and the motor, so budget for wear parts as a running cost rather than an occasional surprise.

Our units are built with the motor enclosed in the frame, an enclosed body protecting components, genuine NSK rotor bearings on balanced rotors, a timing belt transmission, an anti-cavitation safety valve, adjustable skids and a rear hood deflector. A hydraulic debris door is available on the 8 tonne class and up, pre-wired with a Deutsch plug, so you can hold material in for finer sizing.
